Well ok, not planes-but on March 21, 2015, which will be the
175th anniversary of the first train arriving in Raleigh, the City
of Raleigh and the North Carolina Department of Transportation will break
ground on the first phase of Raleigh’s new Union Station.
The first phase will begin with the conversion of the old
Dillon Supply Company warehouse, located on West Martin Street, into a
passenger rail facility. When completed, Raleigh’s Union Station will be a
transportation hub for both local and regional commuter trains and passenger
rail trains but also buses, taxis, bicycles and pedestrians.
The City of Raleigh Planning Director, Ken Bowers, said,
“The design respects and builds on what’s special about the warehouse district.
The reuse of existing industrial buildings will result in a unique and dramatic
space. The echoes of the area’s railed and industrial heritage are reflected
throughout the design”.
"Creating great public spaces, both interior and exterior, are significant goals for this project, " said Steve Schuster, the project designer.
The new plaza will be a focal point of innovation for the
downtown core. It will become a gathering place for all, not just travelers but
also residents of the area, workers and visitors to our wonderful city.
The estimated completion date is 2017.
