What To Do This Month To Maintain Your New Home September

Ah yes, Fall! Cooler days, crisp nights-it's my favorite time of year! Apple picking, pumpkin patches and soon, smiling little goblins trick or treating!

Interior: Change furnace filters. This is the month to have your heating/cooling system inspected by a licensed professional.  If you have a wood-burning fireplace, be sure to inspect the chimney flue and check that the damper operates easily. Consider hiring a chimney sweep to clean the flue. Clean the glass on your fireplace doors. Open windows to air the house out after being closed up for so long and repair any loose or torn screens.

Exterior: Stock firewood for your wood-burning fireplace or your fire pit. Remember to store wood away from the house and in an area that gets good air circulation. Termites are very prevalent in our area and storing the wood away from the structure will save you money and angst down the line!  Check the flashing on the roof around vents and the chimney. The rubber deteriorates over time and might need to be replaced. This is not an expensive task and will prevent water leaks into your home. Now is the time to bring in any plants you want to "winter over" and also the time to buy some beautiful mums for color. Clean the white film that may have developed on your patio or sidewalks. If a stiff bristle brush and soap and water doesn't work, try muriatic acid that you can find at any hardware store (be sure to follow the directions carefully).
